How Does Playing & Exercising Outside Affect The Brains of Kids & Adults? #130

September 12, 2018 by Phil Carson Leave a Comment

Nowadays many people aren’t spending enough time outside … especially kids. Between devices and screens, we seem to be inside more than any generation in history. On today’s episode, Dr. Phil & Anna Kat talk about a University of Illinois study (https://nyti.ms/2QkZhsu) and how kids who got 70 minutes of exercise daily saw cognitive score improvement greater than the children who didn’t exercise. Phil & Anna also talk about how this applies to adults, too!

“Fact Or Fiction” Segment [3:21]: “Exercise can make you smarter and help you focus. … Fact or Fiction?”

Episode 94: How Can I Avoid the Holiday Humps, Lumps, and Bumps?

December 11, 2017 by Phil Carson Leave a Comment

Are you ready to live? Really live that feeling good life you desire to live? Thank you for joining me on this episode of the Feeling Good Podcast, it’s great to be alive. On this feel good day we will discuss two specific strategies you can use to avoid getting the holiday humps, lumps, and bumps that often come this time of year.

Key Takeaways from This Podcast:

[1:08] Go to carsonnatural.com/resources for a variety of free resources to help you live a healthier life.

[1:31] This time of year tempts us to eat a lot of things we don’t normally eat. Due to the excessive eating and overabundance of sugar, people tend to gain weight.

[3:10] Dr. Phil is going to share two of his seven tips today to help you avoid the holiday humps, lumps and bumps.

[3:39] Dr. Phil’s first tip for avoiding the holiday slumps is to cut out the bread; especially bread made with white flour.

[4:42] Reduce the portion sizes of other starchy carbs such as potatoes, mac and cheese, pasta, etc. If you want to enjoy some of those, eat smaller amounts.

[5:29] You should be able to enjoy a small serving of your favorite dessert if you’ve cut out the bread.

[7:00] Cut out sweet and sugary drinks and you can enjoy your small portion of dessert even more guilt-free.

[7:58] If you’re making your own desserts and treats try to use sugar substitutes such as stevia or honey.

[8:43] Get the rest of Dr. Phil’s keys to avoiding holiday weight gain, plus more, at carsonnatural.com/product/holidayhumps/. You can purchase the Seven Keys to Avoiding Holiday Humps, Bumps, and Lumps mini course, plus get free bonus content to help you survive the holidays and to get ready for your New Year’s resolutions.

[9:57] This episode’s Feeling Good Superhero is John. John recently told Dr. Phil that he cut the bread from his diet as Dr. Phil had suggested. John says he has so much more energy and it has made a tremendous difference. A lot of people that eliminate processed bread and cut the bread out of their daily diet have better blood sugar levels and control over their weight. A lot of people feel like they can’t give up bread. You don’t have to have bread with your meal. Eliminate the bread, or drastically reduce how much you eat of it, and you will do better at maintaining weight and controlling your blood sugar just like John.

[12:33] The greatest joys in life come not from you being lifted by others, but rather by others being lifted by you.

[12:50] Please check out the free resources at carsonnatural.com/resources and check out Carson Natural Health on Facebook, and join Dr. Phil every Friday, during the noonday hour, Central Time, for his weekly Facebook Live broadcast called Feeling Good Fridays—broadcast from a different location every week.

Prediabetes, Could It Be You?

November 10, 2017 by Phil Carson Leave a Comment

According to the centers for disease control, one out of three people in the United States have prediabetes, and nine out of 10 Prediabetics DON’T KNOW they are!

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, and I want you to to be aware of this problem that nine out of 10 people do not even know they have. Maybe you have never even heard of the term prediabetes. So what is it? Having Prediabetes means that your blood sugar is higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. If you have Prediabetes, then you may be at risk for type II diabetes. The CDC has developed a simple test to score yourself and see if you are possibly Prediabetic.  If your score indicates that you are Prediabetic, then I recommend that you make an appointment with your health care provider as soon as possible.

Type II Diabetes is known as a lifestyle disease and it can be prevented. Statistics show that 15-30% of people with Prediabetes will develop Type II Diabetes within five years. You can prevent and/or reverse your Prediabetic condition, and possibly prevent the onset of Type II Diabetes by incorporating these three simple habits into your daily routine.

  1. The number one thing you must do is learn to eat a more healthy and balanced diet, a diet that includes a good lean protein and fruits and vegetables. In addition, you must drink more pure water and less sugary drinks, such as sodas.
  2. The second habit you need to add to your routine is being more active by incorporating daily exercise. You don’t have to join a crossfit gym, but you do have to get up and be intentional about being active every day. If you haven’t been active in years, just walking 30 minutes a day would make a huge difference in your body.
  3. The third recommendation is to lose those extra pounds you’ve been carrying around. Of course if you do follow my first two recommendations that should happen naturally. If you are diligent, it will be quick at first, which will feel great! It will slowly taper off though, so don’t be discouraged. Just get the ball rolling and it will pick up speed!

Take this risk seriously! The Diabetes epidemic is at an all time high in the United States and in the world today. I encourage you to do your part, start living a healthier lifestyle, and help put a stop to this epidemic! If you’re not sure how to get started with these recommendations and don’t believe you have the will power to do it on your own, don’t be discouraged.  You’re not alone, many others, just like you, feel the same way.

Check out my latest episode on The Feeling Good Podcast, “90: Help! We Have an Epidemic – What Can We Do to Stop It?” where I talk about prevention, reversal and management of diabetes.

Episode 87: I Have Cancer, Should I Exercise?

November 7, 2017 by Phil Carson Leave a Comment

Are you ready to live? Really live that feeling good life you desire to live? Thank you for joining me on this episode of the Feeling Good Podcast, it’s great to be alive. On this feel good day we’ll discuss a question many people ask, “Should I exercise if I have cancer?” We’ll talk about what factors to consider and the many benefits of regular exercise.

Key Takeaways from This Podcast:

[1:07] Go to carsonnatural.com/resources for a variety of free resources to help you live a healthier life.

[1:33] Dr. Phil recommends continuing to exercise if you have cancer.

[3:10] Making exercise a part of your daily routine can help you deal with the toll that cancer treatment can take on your body.

[3:42] Exercise is important not only to keep your body strong, but is beneficial for your mood and outlook on your recovery.

[ 3:53] Exercise is one of the best treatments for depression and many people have to battle with depression when dealing with cancer.

[4:29] There is a link between physical activity and quality of life for everyone, and especially cancer patients.

[5:04] How can exercise help?

[5:58] You may not be able to exercise at the same intensity level as before your cancer treatments, but you can continue.

[6:50] Dr. Phil shares guidelines to help cancer patients.

[9:01] Remember to monitor your heartrate and breathing; you don’t have to push yourself too hard.

[9:42] It’s important to stay in communication with your doctors.

[9:56] Dr. Phil recommends his personal, virtual trainer Jeff McMahon, who also works with cancer patients. You can find Jeff at totalbodyconstruction.com and he would be happy to help you or direct you to others who could help with your exercise goals.

[11:23] This episode’s Feeling Good Superhero is my dad. Several years ago my dad was diagnosed with CLL, Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, and after that he was diagnosed with lymphoma. Four years ago he was really suffering, he struggled getting out of bed and off the couch. He was using pain medication and was also taking medication for diabetes. He wasn’t doing well at all. However, someone gave him some sound advice at church and suggested he talk to someone they knew who also had CLL. This person was able to talk through things with him and give him some advice on things that had worked well for him. He started sleeping on heating pad at night, walking every day, and eating cleaner. He took a few steps and kept building on it. Before long he was walking a mile and he now walks four miles a day. He still has the leukemia, but I have no doubt the exercise is what has helped him to be stronger than his disease. He does a lot of things other 74 years olds can’t, even those without cancer. Dr. Phil thanks his dad for being our superhero of the day.

[14:46] The greatest joys in life come not from you being lifted by others, but rather by others being lifted by you.

[15:08] Dr. Phil thanks you for listening and for spreading the message of natural health and wellness and for sharing the podcast. Please rate and review the podcast, take a screenshot of your podcast review in iTunes, email it to: [email protected], and Dr. Phil will send you a free copy of his new book, How to Live Until You Die: The 7 Keys to Living Happy Healthy and Whole.

It’s time for us to stop living in fear and start fighting the fear of cancer. There are many ways to fight this fear through exercise, nutrition and more. Don’t live in fear! I can help YOU! I offer a FREE non-committal fifteen minute session to any prospective client to determine if there is a good fit for working together, so there’s no reason to suffer from the fear of cancer or any other diseases without seeking help.

Schedule a call with me today for a health consultation and find the right coaching package to get you feeling good again! You can choose to have your session in person, over the phone or with video conference software.

If you are dealing with cancer or someone you know is dealing with cancer, listen and share my two most recent podcasts, #86, “What Can I Do to Keep from Getting So Sick As I Go Through Chemo,” where I talk about the benefits of nutritional therapy and exercise while undergoing cancer treatments and #87, I Have Cancer, Should I Exercise?, where we I talk about what factors to consider and the many benefits of regular exercise. The information in these podcasts can be life changing and make a tremendous difference in how you respond to the cancer itself, as well as the treatment you are going through. The benefits of nutritional therapy during cancer treatments are that it supports immune system function, preserves the lean body mass, helps to rebuild body tissues, increases energy and strength, decreases risk of infection, and improves quality of life.

Are You Suffering

October 13, 2017 by Phil Carson Leave a Comment

Are you suffering? If you are like some of my clients, you’ve suffered from “it happened when . . .” syndrome. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month, and this month I am talking about cancers and how they are destroying people’s lives in a lot of different ways every day. My own mother in law just recently passed away from brain cancer, and my wife Kim and her sibling were the primary caregivers of their mother. As Kim took care of her mom and her own family, she knew that she needed to be extra careful with herself due to the extra stress in her life. You can hear more of her story in The Feeling Good Podcast episode 85.

People can often trace their poor health back to traumatic or stressful events in their life. This is known as “it happened when . . .” syndrome. Are you suffering? Let me help! Many people go through traumatic experiences and hold their feelings inside and do not talk about it with others. Open communication is important when going through a difficult trial. I suggest talking about what is going on rather than holding it inside. When you hold things inside, it binds it up, and that binding can make you sick. Talking about it gives you freedom!

You might be thinking I don’t need to talk about my problems, symptoms or condition. I can deal with it on my own. Let me ask you a question? How is it working for you so far? Or maybe you are concerned that you can’t afford to work with me, but can you afford to suffer through life because you didn’t ask for help? I offer a FREE non-committal fifteen minute session to any prospective client to determine if there is a good fit for working together, so there’s no reason to suffer without seeking help.

Schedule a call with me today for a health consultation and find the right coaching package to get you feeling good again! You can choose to have your session in person, over the phone or with video conference software.

Healthy Blessings,

Dr. Phil

How to Naturally Cure Depression

September 14, 2017 by Phil Carson Leave a Comment

How to Naturally Cure Depression

Whether you have been clinically diagnosed with depression, or you simply feel unhappy with yourself or your situation in life, there is a way to overcome your perpetual feelings of discontent. I have dealt with some of these feelings myself, and I put a lot of time into building a method for helping people get rid of their anxiety, stress, and mental anguish. I call it The Seven Keys to Living Happy, Healthy, and Whole.

If you follow the seven keys, you can:

  • Increase your happiness
  • Learn how to get rid of negative emotions
  • Improve your diet
  • Build a regular exercise program that fits your needs and your personality
  • Discover a restorative sleep pattern tailored to your schedule
  • Alleviate pre-existing physical conditions that can contribute to—or stem from—depression

My book How to Live Until You Die outlines each of the seven keys and goes into detail on how to take the proper steps to implement each key into your own life. While each of the keys contributes to overall health and happiness, they also individually promote significant improvement in specific areas. For example: Having the right diet will help greatly in maintaining a healthy weight, but did you know that it can actually boost mental health as well?

Research has proven there is a direct correlation between depression and an unhealthy diet. Do you eat a lot of sweets and other processed foods? That can cause unhappiness. While it may seem like fast food is your only option in the middle of a busy day, it can be a major instigator to feelings of depression, poor eating habits, and obesity. There are plenty of healthier options that take less time to prepare than you think.

Raw fruits and vegetables are a great snack because not only do they require little to no preparation, they are a natural source of vitality. Instead of consuming empty calories which can also act as depressants, consider snacking on raw fruits and vegetables. Some fruits and vegetables even have properties known to boost energy, fight disease, and put you in a good mood. Other foods to consider in your depression-defeating diet are scallops and salmon, which both have been found to improve mood and reduce depression.

In addition to a good diet, having a regular exercise routine will do wonders for your mental health. If you don’t already exercise regularly, finding a good routine can be hard, but it doesn’t have to be. Three tips that I like to give my clients and friends are:

  1. Start with walking
  2. Find something you love
  3. Do more than you did yesterday

Walking is very therapeutic and can help to relieve stress. Finding an exercise that you love can give you great peace and add to the defining characteristics that make you who you are. You can also expand your social interactions by joining a group centered on a certain activity that you enjoy (runners, bikers, swimmers, etc.). One of the best ways to get started with any exercise is to set a goal of doing more than you did yesterday. No one is going to get off the couch after months of not exercising and complete one of the rigorous home-video workouts from the “As Seen on TV” workout plans. Keep it simple. Pick a fun activity that provides exercise, and start slow. Once you’re comfortable with a certain volume, add in personal challenges to push yourself and make it even more fun.

When it is possible, try to get 30 minutes of sunlight each day. Doing so will increase your Vitamin D levels and you will benefit from the fresh air and the feeling of the sun itself. Low Vitamin D can cause memory deficiency, general health risks, and is also linked to depression.

Another thing that can help you overcome heartache, depression, and emotional pain is to acknowledge your spiritual side. I personally read the Bible and spend time in regular
prayer and meditation. Knowing that God is in control, that He loves you, and that He wants to spend time with you can lighten any burden and bring peace and gratitude to your life in unparalleled ways.

Sunny days make you happy, rainy days make you sad, and Xanax makes you feel in-between.
I won’t act like it didn’t make my anxiety better. It did. But it also made me feel sluggish all the dang time. Like, I don’t want to be anxious, but I don’t want to be a zombie either. I’m still on the hunt for a solution to this, but ain’t it.

For more advice on how to overcome depression naturally, get your copy of
How to Live Until You Die today. Each of these topics and more are covered in detail, and each of the seven keys has concrete steps laid out so that you can build your own successful blueprint to living happy, healthy, and whole. Also, please check out my website for free resources to help you live, really live.

Healthy Blessings,

Dr. Phil
