Episode 96: We Don’t Need Another Drug; We Need Another Hug

January 3, 2018 by Phil Carson Leave a Comment

Are you ready to live? Really live that feeling good life you desire to live? Thank you for joining me on this episode of the Feeling Good Podcast, it’s great to be alive. On this feel good day we’ll answer this question: could a hug a day keep the doctor away?

Key Takeaways from This Podcast:

[1:08] Go to carsonnatural.com/resources for a variety of free resources to help you live a healthier life.

[1:28] Hugs can bring a host of health benefits to your body and a warm embrace could even help to prevent sickness.

[2:55] A study done by researchers at Carnegie-Mellon University determined that people who had more social support were less likely to come down with the common cold. Hugs counted for 32% of that beneficial support.

[4:09] Hugs can increase the release of oxytocin in our bodies.

[5:07] Oxytocin is a powerful hormone that acts as a neurotransmitter in our brain and when we hug or kiss a loved one, oxytocin levels are increased.

[6:24] Hugging and the oxytocin release that comes with it can drop the stress hormones in our bodies.

[6:51] Another study found that higher oxytocin levels were associated with lower cardiovascular and sympathetic nervous system reactivity to stress in postpartum women. Pre-menopausal women who had more frequent hugs had higher oxytocin levels and lower blood pressure.

[7:35] Moods, depression, and anxiety can all be exacerbated during the holidays. Oxytocin, can help increase the levels of feel good hormone such as serotonin and dopamine, which may be why it has calming effects.

[8:50] Just because we are in the middle of cold and flu season, there is no reason to keep our distance from people we care about.

[9:01] Getting a firm, feel good hug before going into a stressful situation or if you are already in a stressful situation, this could help you feel more calm.

[10:03] We don’t really need to worry about the oxytocin levels. What really matters is how our interactions impact our emotional well being.

[10:58] We must not forget the real reason for celebration during the holiday season—God’s gift of Jesus Christ. Spread some good love, cheer, and hugs.

[11:49] This episode’s Feeling Good Superhero is Dr. Phil’s wife Kim. Kim says, “Hugging just always makes me feel better. It makes me feel secure and safe and loved and I hardly walk by Phil that I don’t touch him or give him a hug…” Dr. Phil said Kim greets him with a big bear hug and it relieves the stress of the day. He emphasizes: “We don’t need another drug, we need more hugs.” Dr. Phil encourages everyone to get more hugs from the people that you love and that love you. Kim says she grew up in a loving home where they hugged a lot so she was used to hugging being a sign of affection which she carried into her marriage. A simple pat or hug can make someone else feel that they are special. She now sees her children hugging others. Dr. Phil says, “I think hugging is a vital part of our well-being.” Use hugging to make someone’s holiday season brighter.

[15:41] The greatest joys in life come not from you being lifted by others, but rather by others being lifted by you.

Episode 95: If the Holidays are Supposed to be Full of Comfort, Peace, and Joy, Then Why Am I So Stressed?

January 3, 2018 by Phil Carson Leave a Comment

Are you ready to live? Really live that feeling good life you desire to live? Thank you for joining me on this episode of the Feeling Good Podcast, it’s great to be alive. On this feel-good day we’ll talk about the Christmas season and all the hustle and bustle that comes along with it, as well as the stress. I know all about stress during the holiday season and it’s very real, but there are ways we can harness holiday stress.

Key Takeaways from This Podcast:

[1:15] Go to carsonnatural.com/resources for a variety of free resources to help you live a healthier life.

[1:38] Dr. Phil has worked retail sales during the holidays in the past and knows how stressful this time of year can be.

[2:47] How does stress affect you? New research is showing that the harmful part of stress often stems from what we believe about stress.

[4:55] Dr. Phil recently taught a class about how stress affects hormones. How we view stress in our lives can cause more harm than the stress itself.

[6:06] As you encounter stress over the holidays, consider your attitude toward these stressors.

[6:58] Stress by definition is a response that your body produces reflecting what you are thinking and feeling in that moment.

[7:55] The only way to change what is happening in our bodies is to change the way we’re thinking.

[8:13] Instead of framing our situation as a fight or flight situation; we try to think of it as producing a challenge response. This can give us more energy and ability to take charge of our situation.

[9:18] We need to be more open to the possible health benefits of stress.

[12:56] It is people’s attitudes and thoughts that can contribute to their premature death related to stress.

[13:28] This episode’s Feeling Good Superhero is Santa. What is Santa’s nickname? Jolly Old Saint Nick. I encourage you to be more like Santa over the holidays and be more jolly. Be more joyful and happy and spread that joy and happiness like Santa Claus does. He is spreading joy and happiness and peace. When we are encountering stressful situations we can spread joy and peace. Let’s be more like Santa.

[15:15] The greatest joys in life come not from you being lifted by others, but rather by others being lifted by you.

Episode 94: How Can I Avoid the Holiday Humps, Lumps, and Bumps?

December 11, 2017 by Phil Carson Leave a Comment

Are you ready to live? Really live that feeling good life you desire to live? Thank you for joining me on this episode of the Feeling Good Podcast, it’s great to be alive. On this feel good day we will discuss two specific strategies you can use to avoid getting the holiday humps, lumps, and bumps that often come this time of year.

Key Takeaways from This Podcast:

[1:08] Go to carsonnatural.com/resources for a variety of free resources to help you live a healthier life.

[1:31] This time of year tempts us to eat a lot of things we don’t normally eat. Due to the excessive eating and overabundance of sugar, people tend to gain weight.

[3:10] Dr. Phil is going to share two of his seven tips today to help you avoid the holiday humps, lumps and bumps.

[3:39] Dr. Phil’s first tip for avoiding the holiday slumps is to cut out the bread; especially bread made with white flour.

[4:42] Reduce the portion sizes of other starchy carbs such as potatoes, mac and cheese, pasta, etc. If you want to enjoy some of those, eat smaller amounts.

[5:29] You should be able to enjoy a small serving of your favorite dessert if you’ve cut out the bread.

[7:00] Cut out sweet and sugary drinks and you can enjoy your small portion of dessert even more guilt-free.

[7:58] If you’re making your own desserts and treats try to use sugar substitutes such as stevia or honey.

[8:43] Get the rest of Dr. Phil’s keys to avoiding holiday weight gain, plus more, at carsonnatural.com/product/holidayhumps/. You can purchase the Seven Keys to Avoiding Holiday Humps, Bumps, and Lumps mini course, plus get free bonus content to help you survive the holidays and to get ready for your New Year’s resolutions.

[9:57] This episode’s Feeling Good Superhero is John. John recently told Dr. Phil that he cut the bread from his diet as Dr. Phil had suggested. John says he has so much more energy and it has made a tremendous difference. A lot of people that eliminate processed bread and cut the bread out of their daily diet have better blood sugar levels and control over their weight. A lot of people feel like they can’t give up bread. You don’t have to have bread with your meal. Eliminate the bread, or drastically reduce how much you eat of it, and you will do better at maintaining weight and controlling your blood sugar just like John.

[12:33] The greatest joys in life come not from you being lifted by others, but rather by others being lifted by you.
