Episode 102: Is There a Healthier Alternative to the Sports Drinks on the Market Today?

February 13, 2018 by Phil Carson Leave a Comment

Are you ready to live? Really live that feeling good life you desire to live? Thank you for joining me on this episode of the Feeling Good Podcast, it’s great to be alive. On this feel good day we will discuss why you don’t want to drink the sports drinks that are on the market today and how you can easily make a healthier alternative to enjoy after your workout.

Key Takeaways from This Podcast:

[1:08] Go to carsonnatural.com/resources for a variety of free resources to help you live a healthier life.

[1:27] Dr. Phil’s latest webinar, “The Secrets to Turning Your Body Into a Fat-Burning Machine in 2018,” will be available again soon. You can pre-register and save your spot for the webinar at carsonnatural.com/pretransform.

[3:27] How can you rehydrate and replenish after a workout without drinking unhealthy sports drinks?

[4:38] Find Dr. Phil’s list of Seven Big Toxins at carsonnatural.com/resources.

[4:47] Most all sports drinks contain hydrogenated oils, artificial sweeteners, dyes, and colors.

[5:35] You can make your own sports drink. Use 16-20 ounces of pure spring water, then add ⅛ tsp of Himalayan salt, which is rich in minerals. You can then add fresh cut up fruits, and sweeten with Stevia or raw honey. Shake it up really well and you have a healthy sports drink. You can also sweeten it with SweetLeaf Water Drops to desired taste.

[8:40] This episode’s Feeling Good Superhero is Colin. Colin loves playing baseball and was having some trouble last year with headaches and feeling washed out and lethargic during his baseball tournaments. Dr. Phil asked Colin’s mom what he was eating and drinking and learned that Colin was drinking a blue sports drink during all the games. Dr. Phil encouraged Colin to drink water instead and this resolved Colin’s health problems. He learned he had been having a reaction to the sports drinks. Dr. Phil gave Colin’s mom the homemade electrolyte drink recipe to for Colin to drink during baseball season.

Episode 93: Is What You Believe About Diabetes Possibly Wrong?

November 30, 2017 by Phil Carson Leave a Comment

Are you ready to live? Really live that feeling good life you desire to live? Thank you for joining me on this episode of the Feeling Good Podcast, it’s great to be alive. On this feel good day I expose some of the myths about diabetes.

Key Takeaways from This Podcast:

[1:14] Go to carsonnatural.com/resources for a variety of free resources to help you live a healthier life, including a simple test to find out if you are pre-diabetec.

[1:49] Today Dr. Phil will expose some of the myths about diabetes.

[3:26] Public health authorities can do little to change the diabetes epidemic. The methods they are using do not work. It is up to you and I to make a change.

[5:20] Myth #1: “Diabetes always gets worse.” This is not true. Type II Diabetes is preventable, controllable, and reversible.

[6:17] Myth #2: “Diabetes is genetic. You just have to learn to live with it.” This is not true. Lifestyle can trump genetics, even if you are genetically predisposed for diabetes.

[8:12] Myth #3: “As long as you take your medicine, diabetes is not a big deal.” You need to take care of yourself and not rely on a drug to take care of you because it can’t do it. There are horrible side effects and sometimes the drugs make the problem worse.

[11:07] This episode’s Feeling Good Superhero is someone who is on the frontlines trying to help people fight the diabetes epidemic. This person is Dr. Laura Washington of the Life Transformation Medical Center. Dr. Laura and Dr. Phil work together to help patients and combine traditional medical care with natural solutions. She teaches diabetics how to prolong their lives and reverse their diabetes. Dr. Phil is thankful to be a part of what she does and helping diabetic patients get control of their lives. Thank you Dr. Laura for helping people to get off of their diabetes medication.

[13:13] The greatest joys in life come not from you being lifted by others, but rather by others being lifted by you.

[13:27] The holidays are here and Dr. Phil will be sharing a lot of information to help you enjoy the holidays healthfully in his weekly newsletter. If you are not subscribed to Dr. Phil’s newsletter, reach out to him at or go to to his site for free resources and subscribe. Episode 92: You Don’t Want Diabetes or Pre-Diabetes, Right? Then You Have Got to Stop Being So Resistant.

November 30, 2017 by Phil Carson Leave a Comment

Are you ready to live? Really live that feeling good life you desire to live? Thank you for joining me on this episode of the Feeling Good Podcast, it’s great to be alive. On this feel good day we will talk about specific measures you can take to prevent diabetes and two treatments that can help with insulin resistance.

Key Takeaways from This Podcast:

[1:11] Go to carsonnatural.com/resources for a variety of free resources to help you live a healthier life.

[1:58] Almost 10% of the U.S. population has diabetes. Diabetes can be prevented and be reversed.

[2:53] Dr. Phil talks about two kinds of resistance that are the underlying cause of diabetes: insulin resistance and people’s resistance to change their lifestyle.

[3:33] What is insulin resistance and how does it lead to Type II Diabetes?

[7:02] Dr. Phil believes that Type II Diabetes and insulin resistance can be reversed. You can do something to make a difference.

[7:17] Dr. Phil recommends two treatments that work extremely well for insulin resistance. One treatment is to take a small dose of a mineral called Chromium.

[9:12] Insulin resistance occurs in two health problems present in some women. One, PCOS and the other, gestational diabetes. Chromium deficiency could play an important role in helping women with these issues.

[9:53] Chromium levels decrease with age, so talk to your healthcare provider to see if you may need to supplement Chromium in your diet. Keep a close watch on your blood levels if you start taking Chromium.

[11:05] The second treatment to help with insulin resistance is to change your diet. If you want to see some significant changes in your blood glucose levels, then you have to make lifestyle changes. You can’t be resistant to change. Start with a balanced diet.

[11:56] The standard American diet is killing us and we have to stop it. We have got to change.

[12:32] Reach out to Dr. Phil and he can help you balance all of the macronutrients that you eat.

[13:50] Remember two things to help you with insulin resistance: take a Chromium supplement and eat a balanced diet.

[14:03] This episode’s Feeling Good Superhero is Sam. Sam was having a hard time controlling blood sugar and was taking a lot of diabetes medications to try to control it. Dr. Phil recommended to Sam that he take Chromium supplements as well as make some dietary changes and the combination made a big difference in Sam’s life. He was able to get his sugar levels under control. If you are diabetic, and you decide to take Chromium, make sure you work with a local health provider or reach out to Dr. Phil.

[16:40] The greatest joys in life come not from you being lifted by others, but rather by others being lifted by you.

[17:01] Please check out the free resources at carsonnatural.com/resources and check out Carson Natural Health on Facebook, and join Dr. Phil every Friday, during the noonday hour, Central Time, for his weekly Facebook Live broadcast called Feeling Good Fridays—broadcast from a different location every week.

[17:49] Dr. Phil will be sharing a NEW mini-course: How to Avoid the Holiday Humps, Slumps, and Bumps. This course will be especially helpful for people who want to enjoy all the parties and fun over the holidays, but not add on that extra weight. Dr. Phil has learned some things to keep that from happening, and he shares this in the mini-course he will be emailing out to subscribers. If you are not subscribed to Dr. Phil’s weekly newsletter, reach out to him at or go to to his site for free resources and subscribe. He shares new offers for his listeners and followers each week via the newsletter.

Episode 91: Are You One of the Millions That Has Something You Don’t Even Know You Have?

November 17, 2017 by Phil Carson Leave a Comment

Are you ready to live? Really live that feeling good life you desire to live? Thank you for joining me on this episode of the Feeling Good Podcast, it’s great to be alive. On this feel-good day, we will be talking about the diabetes epidemic. November is Diabetes Awareness Month and we will be talking about prevention, reversal, and management of diabetes in each episode this month.

Key Takeaways from This Podcast:

[1:04] Go to carsonnatural.com/resources for a variety of free resources to help you live a healthier life.

[1:27] Dr. Phil just left Memphis, Tenn., the city of blues and barbecues. There are a lot of people today singing the blues because they have diabetes. The most famous bluesman, B.B. King, passed away a couple of years ago with complications of diabetes.

[2:14] All this month, Dr. Phil will be talking about diabetes and the diabetes epidemic in the United States, because November is Diabetes Awareness Month. Dr. Phil wants to make you aware of the problems of diabetes, and also of a condition you may not know you have.

[2:37] That condition is prediabetes. It is a serious health condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes.

[2:54] Approximately 84 million Americans — that’s about 1 in 3 — have prediabetes. 90% of those with prediabetes don’t know they have it. That’s alarming! Prediabetes puts you at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and even stroke.

[3:03] It’s time to get checked! There is a simple quiz you can take at the CDC website that will give you an indication that you possibly have prediabetes. Dr. Phil would also highly recommend that you have your blood sugar checked if you have any inkling that you may have prediabetes or if you have a family history of diabetes.

[4:07] Dr. Phil has a very special guest interview on this episode. Dr. Phil interviewed his friend Corie Jones. Corie is an awesome young lady with a great prediabetes story that Dr. Phil wants her to share with you.

[4:39] Dr. Phil highly recommends all listeners, if you know someone right now that has diabetes or prediabetes, to share this show with them. Dr. Phil introduces Corie. Corie first heard of prediabetes when she was 29, overweight, and did not exercise but thought she was healthy.

[6:17] When Corie went for a medical checkup, they did a blood test. She was starting to have symptoms. Corie’s grandmother had just died, 69 years old, with complications of diabetes. The doctor told her she was prediabetic with high blood sugar and asked if she wanted “to end up like” her grandmother.

[7:28] Corie was very offended, and told herself she was a good person and healthy. In reality, she wasn’t healthy. She tried several fad diets, one after the other, lost weight, her blood sugar went down, and she didn’t worry about it anymore.

[8:00] Since then she has had two children, and really struggled losing her baby weight, because of poor decisions she made — lack of exercise and eating the wrong things. Her weight went up and down like an awful roller coaster ride. She tried fad diets for years.

[8:50] Corie’s then five-year-old daughter was scared by a dream one night, and Corie tried to consoled her. Her daughter told her in the dream that Corie had gotten sick and died. That reached Corie. It was so real to her daughter that she couldn’t shake it.

[9:35] Corie remembers all the details from her daughter telling her the dream. Corie

felt convicted. She knew that what her daughter was saying could be a reality if Corie didn’t make some changes. Her body was also telling her to make changes. She felt bad and was having symptoms. She was overweight. Corie figured she was prediabetic again.

[10:09] Corie had let life overtake her. She had put everything else in front of herself. She was involved in way too many activities and organizations.

[10:55] Dr. Phil sees many people who are so involved in activities, but still need to do the things necessary to take care of themselves to be healthy for the people depending on them. Corie got a wakeup call from her daughter. Some people ignore wakeup calls, but Corie listened. Dr. Phil hopes this episode will be wakeup call for someone.

[12:23] Dr. Phil remembers the first day Corie came to talk to him about the changes she wanted to make. Corie listened, and started to implement the changes Dr. Phil recommended for her. So many people hear what they need to do but they don’t do it.

[12:58] When Corie’s daughter had come to her, Corie couldn’t tell her it the bad dream couldn’t happen, because she knew it could. Corie prayed and asked God to forgive her. She also asked her husband and children to forgive her for not taking care of herself.

[13:38] Corie knew that if she was going to make a lifestyle change and not just try another fad diet, she had to have a different reason why she wanted to lose this weight and be healthy. It had to be about being here for her family that she loves so much.

[14:29] Corie prayed for a desire to be healthy, a desire to make this change, and a desire to live better, to eat better, and to exercise, and to be stress-free. She’s learned that when you feel bad, you’re ill, and it makes you hard to be around.

[15:00] Corie realized that if she could get this right, she would be a better person all around. Her next step was when she started to work with Dr. Phil. She says it not only changed her life, it saved her life. Her first meeting with Dr. Phil was very emotional because she felt guilty about how she had let herself get into that condition.

[16:03] Corie first had to deal with that guilt. She had to begin to see herself the way God sees her, and love herself the way God loves her to be able to turn into the person she wanted to be. That was one of the hardest things she was dealing with at the time.

[16:21] Dr. Phil told Corie at their first meeting that she didn’t need to beat herself up. She didn’t need to be hard on herself, that it’s OK. He told her she could do this and today is a new day. She just had to do better today than she did yesterday, and it would get better and better.

[16:41] Dr. Phil had told Corie, it’s not about depriving yourself, or living a way that isn’t ‘you,’ it’s about lifestyle changes. If you mess up, get right back up and don’t let messing up dictate the rest of your life.

[17:08] Corie had to deal with being a perfectionist. She likes things to be done right. When she messed up it was like jumping off the wagon and going back to her old ways. She had to stop trying to make herself perfect, and start trying to make herself better.

[18:03] In that first meeting, Dr. Phil drew a plate on paper and drew portions on the plate of what a healthy balanced meal should be. Corie thought, this isn’t hard, anyone could do this. She had just never taken the time to ask what she should be doing.

[18:34] Corie still has that piece of paper for portion control. Some days she gets it right, and some days she doesn’t, but what’s different now is she knows that if she messes up she doesn’t have to jump off the wagon. She can do better the next day.

[19:02] Corie loves that it’s not about depriving yourself, it’s about finding healthy alternatives. Changing that mentality was key for Corie.

[19:18] Dr. Carson reviews points from Corie’s story. First, Corie had inserted a spiritual component. Sometimes we rely on willpower, mind, and emotion, but we don’t bring in the spiritual side of things. Dr. Phil says we need to take care of body, soul, and spirit.

[20:34] The second item Dr. Phil wants emphasizes is about beating yourself up. Dr. Phil is also a perfectionist that beats himself up. So many people do mess up, then beat themselves up, and they quit. You can’t do that! You’ve got to keep fighting, keep going, forgive yourself if you mess up, pick yourself back up, and keep going.

[21:22] Get back up. Start over. You can continue to start over. So often, people fail, because they just totally quit. They say, “I can’t do this, I’m a failure.” If you listen to this show, don’t do that to yourself!

[22:04] Corie shares her lifestyle changes and habits. First, she started teaching her daughter how to cook healthy foods. They learned it together, instead of eating out every night. They got ideas from Dr. Phil and blogs on healthy dishes to cook.

[23:43] At the time, Corie was homeschooling her daughter, so cooking became a class and they would prepare lunch and dinner together every day. Learning to cook with her daughter formed memories Corie will cherish forever.

[24:02] Corie is thankful for her husband who has supported her through this lifestyle change. He makes her feel loved and beautiful. He does whatever he needs to do to help Corie do well. They drink breakfast smoothies together.

[24:44] Corie’s six-year-old son has been a little harder to get on the good track, but he loves fruits, so that’s good. She’s teaching him what it means to eat healthy.

[25:00] Having her family involved has been key for Corie. If she could have done this alone, she would have conquered it years ago. She needed a coach, like Dr. Phil, and she needed a support system, which is her family.

[25:43] Dr. Phil wants to encourage listeners to take to heart what Corie has shared. Corie called for spiritual help, she sought out coaching, and she enlisted her family to be on board with her in her health journey.

[26:18] Anybody on the road to prediabetes or diabetes needs to get off that road and turn things around. You don’t want to be a full-blown diabetic. It wasn’t diabetes, but the complications of diabetes that took her grandmother to the grave at an earlier age.

[26:58] Dr. Phil is so proud of Corie in the changes she has made and how she has implemented all these things into her life that will make a difference for her, for her children, and someday for her grandchildren.

[27:27] Make the decision today — if you haven’t already — to make those lifestyle changes. Contact Dr. Phil if you would like him to help, or give you a recommendation. That’s what he’s here for. Dr. Phil thanks Corie for sharing her story today.

[28:34] The greatest joys in life come not from you being lifted by others, but rather by others being lifted by you.

[28:50] Whether you’re a new or longtime listener, Dr. Phil thanks you and asks you to help him spread the message of natural health and wellness by sharing The Feeling Good Podcast with everyone you know and encouraging them to subscribe also.

Prediabetes, Could It Be You?

November 10, 2017 by Phil Carson Leave a Comment

According to the centers for disease control, one out of three people in the United States have prediabetes, and nine out of 10 Prediabetics DON’T KNOW they are!

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, and I want you to to be aware of this problem that nine out of 10 people do not even know they have. Maybe you have never even heard of the term prediabetes. So what is it? Having Prediabetes means that your blood sugar is higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. If you have Prediabetes, then you may be at risk for type II diabetes. The CDC has developed a simple test to score yourself and see if you are possibly Prediabetic.  If your score indicates that you are Prediabetic, then I recommend that you make an appointment with your health care provider as soon as possible.

Type II Diabetes is known as a lifestyle disease and it can be prevented. Statistics show that 15-30% of people with Prediabetes will develop Type II Diabetes within five years. You can prevent and/or reverse your Prediabetic condition, and possibly prevent the onset of Type II Diabetes by incorporating these three simple habits into your daily routine.

  1. The number one thing you must do is learn to eat a more healthy and balanced diet, a diet that includes a good lean protein and fruits and vegetables. In addition, you must drink more pure water and less sugary drinks, such as sodas.
  2. The second habit you need to add to your routine is being more active by incorporating daily exercise. You don’t have to join a crossfit gym, but you do have to get up and be intentional about being active every day. If you haven’t been active in years, just walking 30 minutes a day would make a huge difference in your body.
  3. The third recommendation is to lose those extra pounds you’ve been carrying around. Of course if you do follow my first two recommendations that should happen naturally. If you are diligent, it will be quick at first, which will feel great! It will slowly taper off though, so don’t be discouraged. Just get the ball rolling and it will pick up speed!

Take this risk seriously! The Diabetes epidemic is at an all time high in the United States and in the world today. I encourage you to do your part, start living a healthier lifestyle, and help put a stop to this epidemic! If you’re not sure how to get started with these recommendations and don’t believe you have the will power to do it on your own, don’t be discouraged.  You’re not alone, many others, just like you, feel the same way.

Check out my latest episode on The Feeling Good Podcast, “90: Help! We Have an Epidemic – What Can We Do to Stop It?” where I talk about prevention, reversal and management of diabetes.

Are You Suffering

October 13, 2017 by Phil Carson Leave a Comment

Are you suffering? If you are like some of my clients, you’ve suffered from “it happened when . . .” syndrome. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month, and this month I am talking about cancers and how they are destroying people’s lives in a lot of different ways every day. My own mother in law just recently passed away from brain cancer, and my wife Kim and her sibling were the primary caregivers of their mother. As Kim took care of her mom and her own family, she knew that she needed to be extra careful with herself due to the extra stress in her life. You can hear more of her story in The Feeling Good Podcast episode 85.

People can often trace their poor health back to traumatic or stressful events in their life. This is known as “it happened when . . .” syndrome. Are you suffering? Let me help! Many people go through traumatic experiences and hold their feelings inside and do not talk about it with others. Open communication is important when going through a difficult trial. I suggest talking about what is going on rather than holding it inside. When you hold things inside, it binds it up, and that binding can make you sick. Talking about it gives you freedom!

You might be thinking I don’t need to talk about my problems, symptoms or condition. I can deal with it on my own. Let me ask you a question? How is it working for you so far? Or maybe you are concerned that you can’t afford to work with me, but can you afford to suffer through life because you didn’t ask for help? I offer a FREE non-committal fifteen minute session to any prospective client to determine if there is a good fit for working together, so there’s no reason to suffer without seeking help.

Schedule a call with me today for a health consultation and find the right coaching package to get you feeling good again! You can choose to have your session in person, over the phone or with video conference software.

Healthy Blessings,

Cinco de Mayo Feeling Good Friday Fiesta

May 5, 2017 by Phil Carson Leave a Comment

It’s Cinco de Mayo, and at Carson Natural, we are celebrating! One year ago today, we started our Feeling Good Friday Facebook Live broadcasts. Can you believe it has been a whole year? We haven’t missed a single Friday yet, and we are planning on keeping it going! Check out some of our fun photos on instagram!

With it being Cinco de Mayo, many people would like to celebrate with a little Mexican style food today! If you are going out to eat at your favorite Mexican restaurant tonight and are trying to eat healthier, you can! Maybe you are on some kind of special diet like I have been over the past few weeks. I’ve been doing a 21 day cleanse and purification diet. Tortilla chips and flower tortillas are not on the menu for me, but that’s alright because I have found an awesome alternative to corn tortilla chips . . . Beanitos.

Have you tried these healthier chips yet? You’ve heard of BYOB restaurants where you can bring your own beverage, right? We need a BYOC restaurant . . . Bring Your Own CHIPS! I LOVE these chips. They are a healthier alternative to the tortilla chips. They have twice as much protein, potassium, and they don’t increase your blood sugar as fast as the corn chips do. If you are a diabetic, that is really important.

Another thing you can do in place of eating tortillas, is to eat just the vegetables and the meat that comes with the fajitas. A lot of people order fajitas, and you can still do that without eating the tortillas. You CAN eat healthy at a Mexican restaurant. It might not be the easiest thing to do, but YOU CAN DO IT!

If you aren’t planning on going out to eat tonight, you can still celebrate at home with an easy to make healthy Mexican style meal. My friend and client, Corie Jones, recently blogged about a really fun way to celebrate at home and stay healthy with her family. She even provides a fun DIY craft for the kids. Check out her Cinco de Mayo blog post! Corie made this statement, “We have to remember that eating healthy is not about depriving ourselves but finding healthy substitutes. This can still be accomplished while supporting our fiesta taste buds today.” Corie, I love it and couldn’t agree more.

Remember what I always say. I’ll say it in Spanish first today. Mantente hidratada, amigos. Es posible que no estar bebiendo suficiente agua, pero usted necesita ser! Stay hydrated, my friends. You might not be drinking enough water, but you need to be!

Keep on Fiesta-ing!

Healthy Blessings,

Dr. Phil

Five Snacks That Your Children Will Thank You For…Eventually

September 12, 2016 by Phil Carson 1 Comment

junk-foodRight now your family is in danger! They are constantly surrounded by weapons of mass destruction, in fact they are on almost every street corner in our country. I’m not talking about drugs and guns! I’m talking about donuts, cheeseburgers, gummies, and potato chips! Snacks!

“Our kids are living on a junk food diet” – Dr. Joel Furman

I recently spoke to a couple with four young children that were looking to fill their day with healthy, go-to, simple snacks, and wanted to share with you the same information that I shared with them! As my title implies, I’m gonna give you five snacks that your kids might resist and even be upset about, but they will thank you for eventually. But first, let me step on my soapbox and say a little more about these “Weapons of Mass Destruction” all around us.

Junk food is no longer just an American problem, it has quickly become a global problem. We see it on every street corner and even on television, with commercials advertising so many different types of junk foods! These foods look appealing (think of how many bright colors we see in the candy aisle) and are designed to taste good, but I want to share with you some facts about junk food and hopefully get you to see these foods in a different light.

Are you a junk food junkie?

Lets start with a proper definition of junk food. When I say junk food, I am referring to food that has little nutritional value but lots of calories. One of the biggest problems with junk food is that they have very low satiation values, which is a medical way to say that you don’t feel full after eating them. This of course leads to overeating. A great example here is a standard bag of potato chips How many times have you or someone you know sat down with a bag of chips and before you know it the bag is over half empty? That is low satiation value in action.

fast_food_meal

Another problem is that junk food tends to replace other more nutritious foods. It is quick, convenient, and doesn’t take time prepare. So it replaces healthier foods that take a little bit more time to prepare. Breakfast is a prime example here. Most of us, and especially those with kids, are in a hurry in the morning. So we save time with things like cereal, pop-tarts, and eggo waffles. We may save time, but we are also setting ourselves up for fatigue later in the day. I’ve talked about this issue specifically in a previous blog, so check it out here.

As I’m sure you probably know and have heard before, over consumption of junk food is a major contributor to the overall health problems of our nation and especially our kids, specifically childhood obesity. Before I share my top five snacks, let me tell you an effective way to cut down on your and your children’s desire for junk food. Ready for it?

Limit the amount of advertising you or they see on television!

Billions are spent on market research every year by companies that want to tap into your brain and make you want their product, and we are constantly being bombarded visually with commercials and ads displaying juicy cheeseburgers or snacks that magically turn your kids boredom into a fairy tale. Who doesn’t want those things? Now there are a couple ways you can do this. Obviously cutting tv time is the easiest way, but if you have a DVR where you can pause or record shows and skip commercials that is also an easy way.

And finally here are my top 5 snacks

  1. Fresh Fruit or Frozen Fruit – Nature’s candy! It is naturally sweet, helps keep you hydrated, and it will leave you feeling full and well nourished throughout the day.
  2. Raw Nuts – Excellent natural sources of the omega oils, proteins, and fiber that our bodies need.
  3. Dark Chocolate – Now this isn’t your Hershey’s dark chocolate, this is 70% or higher cacao. It is a powerful source of antioxidants, can improve blood flow and lower blood pressure, and raises HDL cholesterol and prevents LDL from oxidizing. It also mixes excellently with raw nuts!
  4. Natural Peanut Butter – Click here to check out my Feeling Good Friday broadcast from a couple weeks ago for all the info on natural peanut butter!
  5. Natural low sugar protein bars. Read the labels and be selective and choose the bars with 10 or more grams of protein. These bars are a much healthier alternative to high sugar low protein candy bars.

I want you and your family to be as healthy and well nourished as possible this school year, and I would encourage you to do some research for yourself and find healthy snacks that you can make or buy for you and your family! If you have already ditched junk food, I’d love to hear about your experience, or if you disagree and think junk food isn’t that big of a deal, then leave a comment and lets start a dialogue!

Christmas Movie Series #1 “Why Buddy the Elf Really is Magical”

December 17, 2015 by Phil Carson Leave a Comment

*This week I have my editor, and first born son, Cody Carson guest writing on the blog. He and his wife live in North Carolina where they are missionaries with the Charlotte Eagles Soccer Club. You can find out more about their ministry by clicking here!*

Buddy the Elf really is magical! If you don’t know who I’m talking about then you probably haven’t seen the hilarious movie Elf, starring Will Ferrel. It is one of my and my wife’s favorite Christmas movies, and we’ve seen it on television several times throughout this Christmas season.

elfI’ll catch up on it if you have never seen it, no spoilers here because you really should watch it ASAP if you haven’t had the pleasure … Buddy is a human orphan that climbed into Santa’s bag of toys as a baby. He was taken back to the North Pole and raised as an Elf. As he grew though, all the other Elves began to notice that he was a little different, mostly because he was three times their size, but Buddy never considered the fact that he wasn’t an elf. It wasn’t until he was 30 years old that his world came crashing down around him! Papa Elf, his adopted father, told Buddy that he was a human and who his real father was. Upon learning that news Buddy set out on a journey to New York to find his father and throughout the movie his Elf culture continually and hilariously clashes with human culture.

Elf

One major difference in the two cultures is the food they eat. As Buddy explained at his father’s dinner table one night, Elves have four major food groups: Candy, Candy Canes, Candy Corns, and Syrup. Now this is where the magic really comes into play, because if that is mostly what elves eat, then they wouldn’t be cute and little for long. Buddy the Elf, who is already 6’4″ would probably be over 500 pounds, if that is what he had eaten his whole life. With a sugar filled diet like that, every elf would certainly be type II diabetic. They wouldn’t have a need for those cute little wooden shoes anymore, because both of their feet would have to be amputated. There would be no more time for making toys, because they would have to be making insulin just to survive.

We laugh at the silliness of Will Ferrel’s character, but during the holiday’s how many of our own diets aren’t too dissimilar from his four main food groups? We have to realize that we aren’t magical like Buddy, and that we can’t continue to eat unhealthy diets and still be healthy people. It just doesn’t work like that for humans! However, there are several ways we can imitate Buddy that will help us have a more enjoyable Christmas season!

Buddy always has a smile on his face, and he takes it upon himself to use his smile to spread Christmas cheer! I would challenge you to do the same. Don’t be caught with a frown on your face this Christmas!

anigif_mobile_bac86d6f054307c6b1435daec15b757c-0

Buddy is unapologetic about love! For the people that mean the most to you make sure they know it this Christmas! Don’t let the year end without telling your family and friends that you love them.

enhanced-28923-1417811877-10Compliment people this Christmas! Everyone hears enough criticism on a daily basis. Be the one to break the negativity cycle and use your words to build people up and put a smile on their face and yours!

Although Buddy’s diet borders on the worst I’ve ever seen, his Elf character traits is something we can all aspire to this Christmas. If we can eat less like Buddy and act more like him then we will all have a merrier Christmas!

Merry Christmas from North Carolina,

Cody Carson

Dr. Phil’s Two Super Foods for Diabetes Management

December 1, 2015 by Phil Carson Leave a Comment

I could not let the National Diabetes Awareness month go by without sharing with you my two favorite Diabetes super foods that have been shown in studies to help with insulin sensitivity and blood sugar control.

Actually these foods are two of the best on the planet whether you have prediabetes, full blown diabetes, or are perfectly healthy. Chances are that you already enjoy one of these foods on a daily basis. They are blueberries! The other food you may not have ever heard of. It is a staple of the South American diet. I’m speaking of Chia seed, of course. One of the sweet things about these two foods is that they can be enjoyed together. My favorite way to do that is with a blueberry smoothie. As a matter of fact, the study done on blueberries that shows they help with insulin sensitivity was done using blueberry smoothies. If you’ve been following my blogs for a little while then you have read about Chia seed and it’s tremendous health benefits. When you combine these two super foods together then you get a super duper food!

blueberry smoothieHere is my recipe for a blueberry smoothie, and whether you have diabetes or not, I know you will enjoy this delicious treat.

  • 1 cup of unsweetened almond milk

  • 2 heaping scoops of standard process whey protein powder

  • 2 tablespoons of chia seed

  • 1/4 cup of frozen blueberries

  • 1/4 cup of crushed ice

  • 1 packet of stevia powder (for sweetness if necessary)

Put it all together in your blender and you’ve got one awesome and healthy snack or meal replacement.

In this 2010 study participants drank two blueberry smoothies a day and a significant increase in their insulin sensitivity was the result. That means that the likelihood of becoming prediabetic or diabetic decreases. Below is the summary of the study found on webmd.com

Drinking blueberry smoothies helped obese adults who were pre-diabetic improve insulin sensitivity, researchers report.Sixty-seven percent of people who drank a blueberry smoothie twice a day for six weeks experienced a 10% or greater improvement in their insulin sensitivity, compared with 41% of people in the placebo smoothie group. The study results are published in the October issue of The Journal of Nutrition. The findings suggest that compounds found in blueberries, which have also been found to improve heart health, may help people with prediabetes by making the body more responsive to insulin. What the biochemical chain reaction or cellular pathways might be remain unclear. But given the challenges of getting people to eat more fruits and vegetables, researchers suggest a smoothie may be a tasty alternative to help people increase their fruit and vegetable intake and boost their health.

I also want to give you a quick reminder on the incredible benefits of the Chia seed. This is pulled from my previous blog, Why Doesn’t BB King Eat Chia Seed?

Just two ounces of Chia contains almost 9x more Omega-3s than wild salmon, 5x the calcium of 2% milk, almost 3x the iron in raw spinach, 3x the antioxidants of blueberries, all essential amino acids, vitamin B, D, and E, is an excellent source of fiber, and is a more digestible protein than beans, soy, or peas. The benefits of these little seeds CANNOT be overstated. There is absolutely no reason to not begin incorporating Chia seed into your diet immediately.
