June is National Men’s Health Month, and I couldn’t let the month go by without talking about men’s health!
Probably the most talked about subject in men’s health in recent times is Low-T or Low testosterone. We see commercials on TV, billboards, magazine spreads, and all sorts of advertisements promoting products for Low-T. There are even clinics that have sprang up all over the country with the sole purpose of providing testosterone injections and prescriptions for testosterone replacement therapy products. Hundreds of millions of dollars are being spent on advertising and billions are being spent by men and women alike on testosterone replacement therapy. Low T is not just a medical condition some are suffering from, it is a big business. Low T is a legitimate health condition in both men and women, but primarily men. Testosterone therapy is much needed by some people, and it has helped many patients regain the vibrancy of their life. As with any hormone therapy products there is a potential for harmful side effects for some. That is why, along with the Low T advertisements, you are probably seeing advertisements for lawsuits against the drug companies that are creating and marketing the Low T products. Therefore if you are considering testosterone therapy, I suggest you weigh the benefits vs the risk before you take the plunge and use prescription therapy. My recommendation to you is that you try everything you can first to naturally raise your bodies level of testosterone, especially if you are under the age of 50. Personally I keep my testosterone at optimum levels by using natural techniques, as well as some dietary supplements.
I believe most men can naturally boost their testosterone levels by following these eight tips or techniques.

Go to bed and get some sleep – Lack of sleep can impair testosterone production. Do your best to get 7 to 8 hours a night.

Manage the stress—High levels of stress hormones can dramatically lower testosterone production.

Shed the pounds -Being overweight or obese can cause lower testosterone levels.

Pump it up—Regular weight training exercises even if it’s only twice a week can help stimulate testosterone production.

Hold the brew – consuming too much alcohol can increase estrogen levels and reduce testosterone.

Protein, more protein – if your testosterone level is low it may be because you’re not getting enough protein in your diet.

Ask your pharmacist -There are numerous medications that can lower testosterone. Certain pain medications and prednisone are two examples.

Low zinc – Have your zinc level checked. Zinc is a mineral necessary for testosterone production.

Dr Phil, great article. I have had a number of bad experiences with TRT, and I had to eventually wean myself off of Androgel. I made changes to my lifestyle, began to be extra careful about what I ate and began exercising religiously.
I even set up my own blog dedicated to low testosterone in which I cover almost everything from low testosterone symtoms, the available treatments, all the way upto helpful exercises and natural testosterone supplements.
I have to agree with James on this one. Too many people get caught up in buzzwords and head straight for a quick fix without the proper assessment. These changes need to start at home by exercising and eating smart, not in a ‘clinic’ for vast sums of money. Sheer laziness really. Great share Dr Phil.
