Three keys to health, happiness, and prosperity in 2015

January 10, 2015 by Cody Carson Leave a Comment

My oldest son and his wife (pictured below with my wife and I) recently moved to North Carolina, and on Monday he shared an inspiring five minute audio clip with me that he was introduced to at a church they were visiting. It has a powerful message that reminded me of something I had written a while back that is a very relevant topic for all of us as we start a new year. Now you may have seen something like this before, but this is my own spin on it, and we all need to be reminded of this from time to time.

Three words for Success in 2015!
As my children were growing up they loved playing sports, especially soccer. I was fortunate enough to be able to coach the teams that they played on, and I had to remind them in the beginning of every season of the three words that I hate and would not tolerate them using. I would tell them, “To accomplish your goals and to be victorious, you must eliminate these three words from your vocabulary: can’t, won’t and don’t.”

Never say I can’t, I won’t, and I don’t because can’t never could, won’t never will , and don’t never did accomplish anything.
Replace those three words with: Can, Will, and Did. Say YES I can, I will, and when your goals are met, you can proudly say I did.
Better yet, for an even greater level of success, don’t go it alone, ask someone to hold you accountable and to encourage you along the way. Then you can say YES, we can, we will, and when your goals are met you can proudly say we did it.

I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13

I am sure many of you have made resolutions for 2015. You have set goals for the things you want to accomplish in this New Year. Well I want to encourage you today to eliminate those three words from your vocabulary. You can keep your resolutions, you can accomplish your goals, and you can be victorious in 2015. I believe you can and you will do it.

May God bless you with a healthy, happy, and prosperous 2015, and if you need help setting and/or making your health goals a reality in 2015, please fill out the contact information by clicking here or click on the ask Dr. Phil microphone on the homepage of our website to leave me a voice message.

Healthy Blessings,

Why Dr. Phil Wants to be Like Frosty the Snowman

December 15, 2014 by Cody Carson 7 Comments

I walked into my house the other day to find my youngest daughter watching the old Christmas classic Frosty the Snowman. Needing a break, I sat down to watch it with her. As I sat watching and reminiscing about my own childhood days of watching Frosty, I heard the famous Frosty song and was suddenly struck by three words. Although I have probably heard that song hundreds of times during my 54 years, the three words, jolly happy soul, resonated within me like never before. I thought, “jolly…happy… soul.” That’s me; that’s how I want to be known.
For so many years, I have allowed the hustle and bustle of the holidays to steal my joy. I thought, “Ok Frosty, I will no longer lose my joy, I will choose to be that jolly happy soul that I desire to be.” As I contemplated these thoughts, I was reminded of one of Andy Andrew’s seven decisions that he writes about in his book, The Traveler’s Gift. Decision number 5 begins like this: Today I will choose to be happy. I was also reminded of a scripture I have heard and quoted myself many times.

“A merry heart does good like a medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.”  Proverbs 17:22

frosty
We all know the line in the chorus of Frosty that goes, “And the children say he could laugh and play just the same as you and me.” How sad it is that as adults, myself included, we so often allow the cares of our world to steal our joy and rob us of the pleasures of laughing and playing. This should not and does not have to be. Andy Andrew’s fifth decision, ends like this: I will greet each day with laughter, I will smile at every person I meet, I have a grateful spirit, today I will choose to be happy. I have been challenged, and I challenge you to let this Christmas season be the beginning of living every day full of joy and laughter, to have a merry heart, and to be a jolly…happy…soul.

Merry Christmas and Healthy Blessings to You,
Dr. Phil

Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.
3 John 1:2

It’s Too Cold To Eat Lunch Naked

Following up on our last blog post, we ask this question for you:  How much vitamin D does your body require each day?
Where I live we are entering into a season where the weather prohibits me from eating outside in the midday sun. So in order to get my daily dose of vitamin D I have to rely on supplementation. The importance of vitamin D supplementation is becoming more and more evident through recent research which indicates that most of the U.S. population may be vitamin D deficient.
The following questions are important ones to consider before you begin vitamin D supplementation:

1. How much vitamin D does your body require each day?
2. What is the recommended daily dose of supplements?
3. Can I get too much vitamin D?
4. What if I feel it’s not safe to expose my skin to the sun?
5. Can I get vitamin D from the foods that I eat?

These are all great questions, unfortunately the answers are too long and complex for me to answer in this blog. Thankfully the answers can be found by visiting the vitamin D council’s website by clicking here.

Because vitamin D is a vitamin that you can get too much of it’s also very important that you know what your vitamin D level is before taking supplements. If you’ve never had your vitamin D level checked or if it’s been more than a year, I recommend that you see your local health care provider and request to have your level checked. It can be done with a simple blood test. Once you’ve obtained the results use the guidelines below to determine if you are deficient, insufficient, or have sufficient amounts.

Vitamin D Council                Endocrine Society                Food & Nutrition Board
Deficient                          0-30 ng/ml                          0-20 ng/ml                               0-11 ng/ml
Insufficient                     31-39 ng/ml                        21-29 ng/ml                             12-20 ng/ml
Sufficient                         40-80 ng/ml                       30-100 ng/ml                          >20 ng/ml
Toxic                                 >150 ng/ml

I can’t stress enough how important it is that you have sufficient amounts of vitamin D! If you find you have deficient or insufficient amounts please consult with your health care provider for information on how to restore your vitamin D level. If you have any questions or you would like recommendations for supplementation send your request to [email protected], or visit our website and click on the “Ask Dr. Phil” Radio button and leave your question. Stay healthy and stay warm this winter!

Healthy Blessings,
Dr. Phil

Eat Lunch Naked

November 12, 2014 by Cody Carson Leave a Comment

Feel better and live longer…. Eat lunch naked!!!

This guy gets it!
This guy knows what I’m talking about!

No it’s not a joke, but after reading this blog, if that’s what you want to do, please don’t do it in public!

You may be wondering, how will eating lunch naked make me feel better and live longer? The answer lies in what happens when your skin is exposed to the midday sun. When our bodies are exposed to sunlight it produces a vital nutrient, vitamin D.

So how important is it to your health, that you have sufficient amounts of vitamin D? It has been well known for many years that vitamin D is essential for healthy bones, but recent research has shown that vitamin D may be important to our health for many other reasons as well. According to the vitamin D Council’s website, some of the functions of the body that vitamin D helps with include:

1.Immune system, which helps you to fight off infection

2.Muscle function

3.Cardiovascular function, for a healthy heart and circulation

4.Respiratory system, for healthy lungs and clear airways

5.Brain development

6.Cancer prevention

The research continues and much more is yet to be learned of this vital nutrient and it’s importance to our health.

The best way for you to get the vitamin D that your body needs is to expose your skin to the midday sun. For most of us, in today’s society, that can be much easier said than done. If you are unable to step out into the life-giving sun, then the easiest way for you to get the vitamin D that your body craves is through dietary supplements that are widely available. Regardless of how you get the vitamin D, I believe that it is essential that you do get a daily dose. However, it is just as important to know how much that dose should be, and that is what I will discuss in my next entry.

Don’t be like this guy, you’re smarter than that!

You may choose to “Eat Lunch Naked”, but keep in mind, if you have to eat lunch in a public place, I highly recommend you consider the supplements. They are much easier than having to explain yourself to the police.

Healthy Blessings,

Dr. Phil
